Jack Skowronnek

In 2009, a then 10 year-old Jack Skowronnek, serendipitously read a book that would forever change his life.  A book he checked out from the school library, Drums Girls and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick, has led to a community movement elevating awareness of the plight of pediatric cancer patients and, simultaneously, has raised over $175,000 to date.

This young man from Chattanooga, Tennessee, has his own unique and specific way of raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer causes, for which he's been recognized by the We Are Family Foundation's Three Dot Dash Summit for Global Teen Leaders, Kids Are Heroes, and the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, to name but a few. His organization is called Jack's Chattanoggins.

They shave heads to show empathy for children who lose their hair in the battle for their lives. Because more children are lost every year to childhood cancer than any other disease – more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies, and diabetes combined.

Every June, at the Chattanooga Market , volunteers called “shavees” have their heads shaved in support of kids who lose their hair during cancer treatment. These shavees received donations in their name from their friends and family, and then the donations help fund life-saving pediatric cancer treatment.  Believe it or not, people will give a lot of money to see you sacrifice your hair.  And in my experience, it always grows back!
