Alex Hummel

Alex Hummel

This week's Peace Fund Radio Hero of the Week is 12-year-old Alex Hummel from Sinking Springs, Pennsylvania. And just like the children we've been talking about on today's show, Alex was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2009.

In March of 2012, when Alex was only 9 years old, he and his parents, Kyle and Vicki, founded their own non-profit organization called Keystone Iron Warriors, to support U.S. military veterans who suffer from amputations, burns and other injuries, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Since his early childhood,  Alex had always had an interest in the military. But one day, after seeing a commercial about combat wounded soldiers, he went to his father with tears in his eyes. He told him about the commercial he saw, and asked if they could help our hero’s serving our country.  His father immediately told him yes and donated to the organization, which turned the tears on his face into one big smile.

Today, Alex is 11, and has been serving the needs of the military community for the past three years. His efforts have helped hundreds of wounded veterans to live a better life, and he has helped to raise almost $10,000 to support injured members of the military. He has received a Congressional Citation and special recognition from House Speaker John Boehner for his work with veterans.

Kyle Hummel, a recently retired police officer, joins us today to talk about Alex's latest projects and to tell us what inspired his son to make a difference.
